This pest has earned a reputation as one of the most destructive corn pests around. And once it's inside the husk, there's almost nothing you can do. Today, I'm walking you through this step-by-step, six steps in the order you'd actually apply them, from before you plant to after you harvest. Before we get into the steps, one thing to understand up front. The corn earworm lays its eggs directly on fresh corn silk. Once the larva hatches, it crawls down the silk channel and starts feeding on the kernels. And once it's inside the husk, there is essentially no treatment that reaches it. That single fact is why every step below is about prevention and timing, not fixing the problem after it's already happened. Let's get into it. Step one, choose a resistant variety. Before you even plant, your variety choice is doing work for you. Corn varieties that develop a long, tight husk at the eartip create a genuine physical barrier. Newly hatched larva have a much harder time getting through. This is the single highest leverage decision you'll make all season, and it costs you nothing extra. Step 2. Consider BT corn for larger plantings. These varieties are engineered to express the bacillus thuryngensis toxin directly in the plant, including the silk, which can meaningfully suppress earworm populations without any external spraying. Step 3. Till the soil after harvest every season. This step protects next season, and it's easy to skip. Tilling exposes and kills overwintering pupa hiding in the ground. Skip it, and you're letting this year's pest population carry straight through winter. Step four. Monitor moth activity once silk appears. This is where timing decides everything. Pheromone traps are the standard way to track moth activity. Sustained activity of around 5 to 10 moths per night is often treated as the threshold for stepping up control. Don't guess, let the traps tell you when to move to the next step. Step 5. Treat the silk channel directly. Within about a week of silk emerging, apply your treatment directly into the silk channel, the single most effective moment in the entire process. A small amount of mineral or vegetable oil applied into the channel physically suffocates young larva, a technique that's been reliable for generations. Biological treatments like Bacillus thuryngiensis or spinocid, applied the same way, offer a similarly targeted effect. If you're using insecticide sprays instead, timing them closely around the pollination window matters just as much. Step six. Rotate your products and support natural predators. Because corn earworm is treated so frequently across such wide growing areas, it's developed resistance to a number of insecticides over time. Rotate between different modes of action rather than repeating the same product season after season. It's also worth encouraging natural predators. Parasitic wasps and certain nematodes naturally target earworm eggs and larvae. Let's run through it one more time, quickly. Choose a resistant variety. Consider BT corn if you're farming at scale. Till after harvest without fail. Monitor moth activity once silk appears. Treat the silk channel directly within that first week, and rotate your products while supporting natural predators.
